The Countdown Fresh Distribution Centre: A Vision of Innovation
Countdown announced its plans for a ground-breaking $99 million investment in a new fresh distribution centre, which will revolutionise its fresh produce supply chain in the South Island. Covering an impressive 11,000 square meters, this distribution centre is set to be a game-changer in how fresh produce is transported from local growers to eager customers.
Our role so far working for Watts & Hughes Construction: Our expert team, led by Chris and Callum, took on the critical task of installing the main switchboard (MSB), cable tray, and executing the first fix in the office area. The team has done an awesome job getting the MSB into the building and the power on via two 1MVA transformers.
Delivering Expertise for Superior Fresh Produce
Countdown’s Director of Property, Matt Grainger, emphasised the importance of this temperature-controlled distribution centre for delivering superior, locally-grown produce to South Island customers. Our work in ensuring the smooth operation of the electrical systems plays a vital role in maintaining the freshness of the produce as it makes its journey from the orchards, farms, or packhouses to the shelves of Countdown stores.
Innovating for Sustainable Solutions
The distribution centre’s design prioritises cool chain integrity, where produce enters a refrigerated inbound tunnel before being efficiently stored in various temperature-controlled zones and ripening rooms.
Powering the Distribution Centre with Solar Energy
The centre will incorporate solar power, harnessing renewable energy to minimise environmental impact. Furthermore, rainwater harvesting and low energy-use condensers throughout the facility reinforce the commitment to sustainability, making this distribution centre a shining example of environmentally-friendly design.
Embracing Green Star Standards
Aotea Electric Canterbury is honoured to play a role in the development of this facility, which adheres strictly to Green Star Standards. Countdown’s goal of achieving a 4 Green Star rating or higher for all new buildings, ultimately transitioning to a 5 Green Star rating by 2025, aligns perfectly with our vision of creating low-carbon, environmentally-conscious spaces.
