Sustainable Solutions
Sustainable Solutions
With nearly 40 years of service in the Canterbury region, sustainability is a core focus for us. We’re committed to finding better, more sustainable energy solutions for both our business and customers.
We offer alternative energy solutions for homes and businesses, harnessing natural resources to combat rising electricity costs. In addition, we assess your building’s electrical consumption in lighting, heating, and electrical equipment to optimize energy efficiency alongside renewable energy solutions
As EcoSmart Electricians and Green Star Accredited professionals, we provide guidance and implement sustainable choices as part of best practices. Collaborating with sustainability experts, we offer specialist advice, services, and products to inform long-term sustainability strategies for our customers.
Electric Vehicle Charging
Electric vehicle charging demand is growing, and there’s a heightened focus on reducing carbon emissions. New Zealand’s renewable energy sources, like hydropower, geothermal, and wind, offer an advantage.
Aotea Electric Canterbury has extensive experience in electric vehicle charging, from residential 7kw units to Public DC fast chargers and Tesla supercharger stations. We provide power supply assessments and efficient installations with a focus on safety.
For commercial fleet charging, we offer load management to optimize existing electrical infrastructure. Remote invoicing and monitoring enhance overall sustainability.
Our electric vehicle charger installations adhere to AS/NZS3000 and Worksafe safety guidelines, with annual periodic testing and inspection for public chargers
Solar Power
Aotea Electric is passionate about helping Kiwi homeowners and businesses transition to solar power. Harnessing solar energy reduces reliance on fossil fuels, curbing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. By adopting solar power, you contribute to combating climate change while embracing sustainability.
We offer comprehensive solar power solutions, from off-grid systems for batches to shed lighting in remote areas, grid-tied systems, or advanced setups with battery storage and smart inverters. Our team provides expert advice, estimates on generation capabilities, and payback periods. We have access to high-quality panels and inverters, some locally manufactured in Christchurch.
We’ve installed 10kw of solar panels on our own offices in Lichfield Street, using locally made inverters. This setup allows us to use generated power during workdays and sell excess power back to the grid on weekends with import/export metering.
Did you know that solar panels are more efficient in cold weather? Even on chilly but sunny Canterbury days, a properly installed system yields good returns.
Connect with our experienced solar team to explore the transformative benefits of sustainable solar power.
LED Lighting
LED lighting is an energy-efficient sustainable alternative to incandescent or halogen lighting. LED stands for light-emitting diode. Initially, they cost slightly more, however, the long-term savings are worth it.
LED bulbs used to be expensive, however, now the price has dropped and is expected to continue dropping. Some bulbs claim that they have a lifespan of 50,000 hours which is over five and a half years of continuous use.
According to the EECA, “if every New Zealand household installed LED lighting, we’d avoid 82,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year – the emissions of almost 34,000 petrol cars.” Make the switch today. We help both home-owners and business owners move to LED lighting.
Our Own Sustainable Initiatives
Aotea Electric Canterbury is committed to responsible community involvement and reducing our environmental impact. We have several sustainability initiatives:
- Recycling: We’ve implemented a recycling policy for fluorescent tubes to prevent mercury release into the environment and offer recycling for office materials.
- Solar: Our office in Christchurch includes solar panels to generate our own electricity, benefitting both our workdays and the local community on weekends.
- Bicycle Parks: We encourage staff to cycle to work, offering the Cycle to Work Scheme and bike parking.
- Planting Native Trees: We sponsor Trees for Canterbury to reforest central community areas, reducing our carbon footprint.
- Electric Vehicles: We have EV chargers at the office and some Electric Fleet vehicles.
- Uniforms: Transitioning to natural-fibre uniforms to reduce our environmental impact and introducing a pre-loved section to reuse apparel
