We recently completed the installation of mast lighting at Cave Rock in Sumner with the help of Joe, Matt G, Nico, and height specialists Chris and Dean.
A head for heights was needed for this installation!
History of the signal mast
The signal mast was erected in 1894 to assist trading vessels navigating the dangerous Sumner Bar and entrance on their way to the Heathcote Wharves at Woolston. Predating electricity, white and black canvas balls were strung from the mast to inform ship captains of the prevailing weather and tidal conditions and avoid hitting the rocks or running aground.
First signal mast lighting
Electric lights subsequently replaced the canvas balls and in later years the mast lighting was used to celebrate events such as ANZAC Day, Christmas, and significant events including the coronation of King Geoge VI in 1937.
Cave Rock Mast in 1997
In 1980 a radio transmitter was installed elsewhere and the mast became redundant as a shipping signal. However, the lighting on the mast remained until the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake damaged the signal house. Following its repair in 2016, the lighting was not reinstated and it has remained unlit until now.
The Sumner-Redcliffs Historical Society called for the reinstatement of the lighting on the mast as a reminder of its historical and social role in the community. The work was entirely funded by donations from the local Sumner community. It was a privilege to work on such a historic landmark. We hope the community continues to enjoy the lights for years to come.
