Andrew and Shane, part of the Aotea Electric Canterbury team, have recently taken a couple of students Banuva and Kahu, from Burnside High School, on a tour of several Aotea project sites as part of their Gateway Programme.
Burnside High School is a valued client of Aotea Electric Canterbury and a request came through asking if we were able to facilitate work experience for final year students interested in learning more about the electrical trade.
About Gateway
Gateway is designed to support school students’ transition into the workforce by offering them workplace learning while at secondary school and we were delighted to help.
Gateway funding enables secondary schools to give senior students access to structured workplace learning integrated with school-based learning. Students’ learning is assessed in the workplace and they can achieve credits on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) towards their National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA).
Getting The Students On-Site
Unfortunately untrained or non-inducted personnel working on building sites can be tricky to facilitate with current H&S regulations. So we put our heads together and came up with the idea of a tour of significant Christchurch electrical projects that Aotea Electric Canterbury has been involved with.
Banuva and Kahu were shown around the CDHB Christchurch Public Hospital, Te Pou Toetoe – Apollo Projects Linwood Pool site, Te Hononga – The Christchurch City Council Civic offices, Te Puna o Waiwhetu – Christchurch Art Gallery, and Orange Theory Stadium.
