The players got their hands dirty helping the charity team, who are all keen Crusaders supporters, pot new trees in their nursery. There were lots of laughs and smiles all-round. The visit ended with hugs and signed shirts. Thanks to everyone involved.
About Trees for Canterbury
Trees for Canterbury are strongly linked to the local community, providing environmental education, providing trees, and undertaking plantings with community organisations and schools throughout Canterbury.
Their Christchurch-based nursery in Charlesworth St provides services for 60-80 clients and also produces in excess of 100,000 native plants each year – some of which are donated, and the rest sold to raise funds for the charity.
Steve Bush, Manager of Trees For Canterbury explained the charity ethos:
Employ: establishing a sense of involvement in the community for disadvantaged people (physically, intellectually, socially and at-risk youth) and providing an environment of acceptance as well as support and training for self-development – instilling self-esteem and work habit.
Educate: working with educational institutions, providing assistance in the teaching of environmental awareness.
Regenerate: cultivating native plants for community planting’s and our own revegetation projects using plant material eco-sourced from local areas.
The charity is nearly halfway to its goal of planting 2 million trees in Canterbury. We’ve been helping by donating trees to the charity and we’ll be getting involved in a community planting day at Halswell Quarry to help plant the trees we have donated so far.
